I take the month of September to get to know my new students to assess their skill levels in a variety of domains. If your child requires an Individualized Education Plan (IEP) I begin to shape the IEP after the assessments are completed. The government requires that all IEPs be created and in place by the end of October. During the month of October, I will contact parent/guardian/external team to set up a date and time for the IEP meeting. Please understand that teachers are not given coverage (a teacher to take over the class while I attend these meetings) so I am restricted to having the meetings after school hours. I do the best I can to accommodate the schedules of external team members (ie. social workers, psychiatrists, Insight Services workers, etc.).
When we meet for the IEP meeting, I will provide a summary of my assessment data, review the basic IEP I created and ask for input. The IEP document that I bring to the table is not complete. It is a starting point so that we can save time. If there is something that I have added to the IEP that you have questions about or disagree with, please do not hesitate to bring it up. If there is something you would like to add to the IEP, let me know. I want your input. I want to ensure that you understand everything that we are doing in order to help your child and I want you to be a part of it.
Below you will find two links that provide additional information about IEP planning. Feel free to check them out!
