I do not believe that homework should be a struggle for parents or their child. If homework becomes a power struggle between you and your child, please do not push the issue. I learned through my own personal experience that homework is not worth the strain on the parent/child relationship.
That being said, it has also been shown that the more practice a person has at developing skills, the more successful they tend to be. I believe that homework can be a time of connection and fun between a parent and their child. Children love to demonstrate their skills. They feel proud when they can show others what they can do. I want children to develop a love of learning and want to do their homework because it is fun, interesting or just plain makes them feel more confident.
Generally speaking, I only ask for two things to be done for homework; reading and work that the student did not complete during class time.
