I am sure that you do many things to help your child to be successful in school but occasionally I have a parent/guardian who asks for further ideas. This is a quick list of what I believe helps children to be successful in school and I've also included a few links below.
- Parents/guardians and the teacher to be on the "same page" and support one another in the development of a sound educational plan
- Daily reading (Children reading to parents as well as parents reading to children)
- Talking about the books that are read and asking questions about the book (ie. Why did Billy do....?, Where are they going? What do you think is going to happen? Why do you think that will happen? etc.)
- Pointing out words as you read aloud.
- Making reading fun
- Reading books that the child enjoys
- Use reading games
- Use math games
- Allow your child to count money (or identify coins) when buying items
- Collaborate with the teacher to create an effective behaviour plan (if needed) and follow through on what was planned
- Keep in contact with the teacher through the Agenda book, phone calls, e-mails and meetings
